VIRSERUMS KONSTHALL

Mattias Härenstam will participate in the exhibition Trä 2013 / Wood 2013 at Virserums Konsthall with two large-scale woodsculptures: I know you are there and Not a single sound. Also the video The Diary of the Unknown Consumer will be on display. The show opens on May 5 and stays open until Dec 8 2013.
  Already in 2004, Virserum Art Museum produced its first major exhibition on the potential and possibilities of wood. In 2013, Virserum Art Museum will produce its fourth exhibition on the topic. Spread over 1300m2 of indoor space as well as several thousand m2 of outside areas, WOOD 2013 will feature exhibitions on and about sustainability, design, arts and crafts, housing policy, architecture and building. JEONJU INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

Reconstruction will get its' international premiere at Jeonju International Film Festival, South Korea, April 25 - May 3 2013. Härenstam's short film will be screened in the section "Stranger than cinema".
JIFF, with its goal to lead ‘A Beautiful Change of the World through Cinema’ under the slogan, ‘Digital Alternative and Independence’ at its start in 2000, has always searched and introduced challenging and creative films which are distant from main stream films and made its position firm as one of the most recognized film festivals focusing on alternative and independent films in the world.

NOW & AFTER, MOSCOW MUSEUM OF MODERN ART

A special selection, including Mattias Härenstam's Closed Circuit (In the middle of Sweden) from Festival Miden (based in Kalamata, Greece) will be screened at the Now&After Festival in Moscow. The festival takes place at Moscow Museum of Modern Art from April 22 - May 5.

VIDEOGUERRILHA SELECTION IN COLOMBIA AND CUBA

Curator Miguel Petchkovsky has made a selection of work from the Videoguerrilha festival in Brazil, to be screened at the Festival de La imagen in Manizales, Colombia April 15 - 19 and at the 5th International Video Art Festival in Camaguey, Cuba  April 22 - 28. The selection includes Closed Circuit (In the middle of Sweden).

LULEÅ KONSTHALL

A solo show by Mattias Härenstam titled "Tillfälligt avbrott" ("Temporary interruption") opens at Luleå Konsthall in northern Sweden on Saturday 9th March at 12:00. The show includes a reworked version of Untitled (28th February 1986), and several video works - Reconstruction, Closed Circuit (In the middle of Sweden)At the end of a dream and Portrait of a smiling man. The woodcut prints will also be on display. The show stays up until April 17th.

THE GADERING

  An ad-hoc exhibition curated by Joachim Cossais, Espen Lomsdalen and Maria Sundby with works of several Norwegian artists opens on Fri April 5th at 19.00 on the premises of the former GAD Gallery (next to the Munch Museum) in Oslo. Mattias Härenstam takes part with one of the wood-cut prints, Down there.

KUNSTHAL CHARLOTTENBORG, COPENHAGEN

The Spring Exhibition (‘Forårsudstillingen’) at Kunsthal Charlottenborg has been held annually in Copenhagen since 1857. It originated as an exhibition showing new works by Danish artists and now features participants from many countries. This years jury - featuring Louise Campbell (1970, DK), designer; Phil Collins (1970, UK), artist; Markus Degerman (1972, SE), designer and architect; Marie Kølbæk Iversen (1981, DK), artist and Kati T. Kivinen (1975, FI), curator - has included Reconstruction by Mattias Härenstam in the selection.
  The show opens on February 28th and stays up until May 12th

PORTRAIT IN THE MOVING IMAGE

Under the umbrella of IKFU, International Konst Film Utställning, curator Tim Reed has created an exhibition titled Portrait in the moving image. The show, including Portrait of a man reminiscent of my father by Mattias Härenstam opens on Friday 8th of March at Jönköping Läns Museum in Sweden. It will be up until 7th April.

VIDEO ART & EXPERIMENTAL FILM FESTIVAL, NEW YORK

Videoart.net is pleased to announce the third annual Video Art & Experimental Film Festival (VAEFF 2013), which will take place February 7-9, 2013 at the iconic Tribeca Cinemas in New York City. Reconstruction by Mattias Härenstam has been selected for Göteborg International Film Festival. The festival opens on Fri January 25th and goes on until February 4th. ATOPIA, OSLO

Propeller: the 1990s
   Retrospective: Film & Video Art, Norway is a research project of ATOPIA that aims for in-depth examination of the historical development of artists’ film and video works in Norway. This project is also an attempt to create a historical context for such art practice. Part 1 (1960 - 90) took place at Stenersen Museum in Oslo March 2011. The second part of the retrospective project (the 1990s) will be comprised of several small-scale exhibitions at Atopia’s own Gallery during 2013-14 before it culminates into a large-scale exhibition and publication. 
   The first exhibition, curated by Natalie Hope-O'Donnell, includes Mattias Härenstams Everyday Life in the Post-Utopian Welfare State (the Rain) from 1998. Opening Jan 17th at 19:00. 17.01 – 17.02.2013. More at Atopia.

 

 

TROMSØ FINE ARTS SOCIETY

A new solo show opens on Nov 16th at Tromsø Fine Arts Society in northern Norway. The show titled "Frykten for å mislykkes" ("The Fear of Failure") will present several new works, including a video/short film with the working title Reconstruction, a site specific sculpture/installation piece and woodcuts. A special presentation of Festival Miden in Athens curated by Olga Daniylopoulou (art critic, Director of Jannis & Zoe Spyropoulos Foundation, Athens) will be shown at the new exhibition space of  La Soirée de Votanique (Kastorias 37/ Votanikos, Athens) from December 1st, until December 28th 2012.

VIDEO GUERRILHA, BRAZIL

NABROAD will present works by artists Catrine Thorstensen, Yngvild Rolland, 
Jet Pascua, Mattias Härenstam and Heidi C Morstang at Video Guerrilha taking place in the streets of Brazil’s largest city São Paulo 21-23. November 2012,  as well as in Rio (January 2013) and in Brasília (April 2013). Mattias Härenstam will contribute with Closed Circuit (In the middle of Sweden).

  The next issue of Swedish cultural magazine Mums - no 3 "The lawless issue" - focuses partly on the murder of Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme and features among others, text and images of Mattias Härenstams' installation Untitled (28th February 1986).

Kunstnerforbundet in Oslo presents a solo show of all new works by Mattias Härenstam. The show opens on 12th April at 18:00 and is titled "Jeg vet at du er der" (I know you are there). More images of the exhibition here.
It features a series of five large-scale wood sculptures. Carved out of entire tree trunks, the sculptures have an overwhelming mass. But at the same time they invite to a rather intimate interaction with the onlooker with their finely chiseled details, some of them grotesque, others more surreal or even lyrical.

A solo show by Mattias Härenstam opens at Galleri 54 in Gothenburg on Fri 30th March at 18:00 and will be up until April 29th. It is a reworked version of the show presented at AKS Art Centre, Norway last year and uses the murder of the then Swedish prime minister Olof Palme as a starting point to investigate the way we construct a view of the world and how this image suddenly collapses. OSLO SCREEN FESTIVAL

The 2012 edition of Oslo Screen Festival includes, among others, Closed Circuit (In the middle of Sweden). The Festival will take place from March 9th-11th with different venues in Oslo (Filmens Hus, Ny Musikk, UKS and Litteraturhuset).

As part of the ongoing CologneOFF VII tour, Closed Circuit (In the middle of Sweden) is to be screened at the 7th annual Carnival of e-Creativity (CeC 2012). WHITE BOX MUSEUM OF ART, BEIJING

Closed Circuit (In the middle of Sweden) will be part of InsideOut Step2 - Latest trends in Western Videoart at the White Box Museum in Beijing Dec 17th - 18th. The show will be an international selection from the first two editions of Arte Video Roma Festival proposed by C.A.R.M.A. - Applied Multimedia Art and Research Center (Rome, Italy). The selection will include some of the most interesting works collected by the curatorial board Le Momo Electronique during its several years monitoring work on Italian and foreign productions.

COLOGNE OFF VII IN MEXICO, CUBA AND MOROCCO

CologneOFF 2011 is currently touring a program including Closed Circuit (In the Middle of Sweden). It is titled "Art & the City: Mirrors", curated by Wilfried Agricola de Cologne and will be shown in Cuba, at the International Videoart Festival in Camaguey 25th-29th Nov 2011 and at ISA - Academy of Arts Havana - 2nd December 2011. Then back to Mexico again with a screening on 8 Dec 19h at CANTE - Centro de Arte y Nuevas Tecnologias in San Luis Potosi. Next stop is Morocco with screenings at the Digital Marrakech, Marrakech on 9th - 10th December. The program was also recently shown in Mexico City, at ExTeresa Arte Actual 10th - 11th November and at the Arte Video Roma, in Rome 21st - 23rd October. More here.

 

 

ÖÖ - WAS IT A DREAM?

Closed Circuit (In the middle of Sweden) will be presented at Öö - Was it a dream? in Tallinn, Estonia 22nd - 26th November. Öö - Was it a dream? is a platform showcasing and connecting avant-garde Nordic designers and artists. More info.

 

 

BETWEEN APPROPRIATION AND INTERVENTIONS

Hundekälte (Nächstes Jahr wirds noch kälter) and Untitled (Raining Stones) will take part in the exhibition Between appropriation and interventions, curated by Berlin-based curator Harald Theiss. The show at Christianssand Fine Arts Society, Kristiansand, Norway opens on October 8th and runs until November 20th.

 

 

SERIAL BOX VIDEO FESTIVAL

Portrait of a smiling man will take part in the Serial Box Video Festival in Columbia, MO, USA. The festival will run through the winter with an opening event on October 14th.

24TH FESTIVAL LES INSTANTS VIDÉO 2011

Closed Circuit (in the middle of Sweden) has been selected for 24th Festival Les Instants Vidéo 2011. The festival takes place in Marseille(la Friche Belle de Mai, les Grands Terrains, La Traverse, Où, Espace Culture, Art/Position, La Tengente, Bastide StJoseph, Mémorial la Marseillaise) from November 4th to 13th.
Another set of screenings will take place in Paris from November 5th to 13th. These screenings will take place at 104 (5 rue Curial, 75019 Paris) and is a collaboration with Jeune Creation.

ENTR'ACTE INTERMEDIALE

Closed Circuit (In the middle of Sweden) will be shown on Italian TV channel Tele Ambiente on Sunday November 13th at 23.15. The show called Entr'acte Intermediale is the first TV show in Italy to specialize in video art and experimental cinema.
Closed Circuit was chosen, together with Riccardo Arenas 25.675 and Igor Imhoffs Small White Dots, from this years edition of the Arte Video Roma Festival.

 

 

ARTE VIDEO ROMA FESTIVAL

5TH JAKARTA INTERNATIONAL VIDEO FESTIVAL

Closed Circuit ( In the middle of Sweden) will be part of the 5th Jakarta International Video Festival, titled "OK Video FLESH". The festival will be held at The National Gallery of Indonesia, Jakarta 6 - 17 October and is organized by ruangrupa. Opening on October 6th at 19:30. More at the festival web page.

 

 

NEW SCREEN NEWCASTLE

Closed Circuit (In the middle of Sweden) will be screened as part of the New Screen - New Castle Video art festival in Newcastle from 9th - 11th Sep. The event focuses on Norwegian video art and is organized by Audhild Dahlstrøm of NABROAD.

COLOGNE OFF VII

Closed Circuit (in the middle of Sweden) is included in a program, part of the CologneOFF VII curated by Wilfried Agricola de Cologne. The program is titled Art & the city - A velvet underground and will be shown at Shams - The Sunflower Art Centre in Beirut, Lebanon 31 Aug - 3 September 2011 and in Riga, Latvia as part of Baltic Sea V, a collaboration with the cultural organisation NOASS and Waterpieces Contemporary and Video Art Festival 8-10 September 2011.

NORDIC ART EXPRESS

Portrait of a smiling man has been selected for the touring video program "Flaggfabriken presenterer Nordic Art Express", curated by Maya Økland and Hilde Jørgensen. The video program will tour the Nordic countries and the Baltic States through 2011.

The screening program has so far been shown at Fotogalleriet, Oslo, the Film School in Lodz, Poland, SUPERMARKET Art Fair in Stockholm, Landmark Bergen Kunsthall, the Trajector Art Fair in Brussels, Temnikova & Kasela Gallery in Tallinn and at the Fishfabrique in St. Petersburg. NORWEGIAN SHORT FILM FESTIVAL

Portrait of a smiling man will be shown in a screening of new Norwegian performance video, titled That's Entertainment! curated by Susanne Ø Sæther for Atelier Nord at the Norwegian Short Filmfestival in Grimstad.
